The temples an monasteries are a popular tourist destination in China. These grand but humble buildings are of ancient origin and hold a deep, spiritual resonance with the area. This post looks at Xumi Fushou monastery in Chengde.
Built in 1780 by emperor Qianlong, Xumi Fushou monastery is built in a similar fashion to the Zhashilunpu monastery where the Panchen Lama lived in Shigatse, Tibet. Though it incorporates many Chinese architectural elements.
Its main building, the Great Red Terrace has three storeys and was built above three-storeys foundation. The Miaogaozhuangyan Hall where the Penchen Lama preached is the centre of the temple. Jixiangfaxi Hall is housed with a roof made of gold plated copper tiles and was the home of Penchen Lama.
Other buildings include the seven-story octagonal Liuli-Wanshou pagoda and a glazed tile paifang. In the stele pavilion of the temple is a four-language memorial plaque with stone engraving in Manchu, Chinese, Mongolian and Tibetan script, with an inscription in memory of the events.
