The islands lie east of mainland Spain the main islands of the autonomous community are Minorca (Menorca), Eivissa (Ibiza), Majorca (Mallorca) and Formentera. Among the minor islands is Cabrera, which is the location of the Parc Nacional de l’Arxipèlag de Cabrera which is a national park that includes the whole of the Cabrera Archipelago.
With a total population of about 100,000 Majorca is the most populated at about 80 percent of the Balearic islands population with Ibiza at only about 12 percent, Minorca at under 10 percent and Formentera at under 1 percent (these figures are from back in 2005 so this may be much different now!)
The languages are mainly Catalan and Spanish, English is quite commonly known, especially in the tourist areas.
The cuisine is very much Spanish or Mediterranean style with plenty of seafood, wines, cheeses (Mao in Menorca actually produces its own), pork and pastry’s with local ones called Ensaimada, Flao and Coca.
